Taita Goat Theft Suspect Lynched

A suspected thief in Taita Taveta county was lynched by villagers in Mbololo on Sunday. They caught him with goat meat which they said was from a goat he had stolen from his neighbour. The man was identified by police as 35-year-old Boniface Ngao. The villagers claim that Ngao was a notorious thief who had been terrorising the village for a long time. Those who nabbed him with the meat alerted other villagers who came out armed with pangas and other crude weapons and attacked the suspect. "He was beaten thoroughly and they also attacked him with stones and was bleeding profusely when we arrived," said a witness

The villagers said the village has been rocked with a spate of robberies recently. "We are enraged by the increasing cases of theft in this area and we shall not spare anyone found stealing," said another villager who did not wish to be identified. Taita OCPD Nathaniel Aseneka confirmed the incident and warned the villagers against taking the law into their hands. He said police have launched investigations into the incident and that the body was taken to Moi District Hospital mortuary in Voi pending a postmortem examination.
